The University of Michigan solar car team entered a vehicle in the 2011 American Solar Challenge Race with the green flag waved in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and the checkered flag in Naperville, Illinois. Seventeen solar car teams from the United States, Canada, Germany and Taiwan competed.

The solar car built by the University of Michigan featured the highly innovative “Indinium Battery” design that included many delicate control panels and circuits controlling various functions of the car from cruise control to the lighting system. It was critical for this battery to be reliably protected by a durable enclosure housing. Metallic enclosure options were quickly declined because of weight. Some thermoplastic materials met the weight needs of the car but not the demanding rigidity requirements.
